What Are the Different Treatment Options for Anxiety Disorders?

October 10, 2022 by Olympia Center for TMS & Psychiatry

The body’s natural reaction to stress is anxiety. During an anxiety episode, you may feel nervous, feel a sense of panic, and also have an increased heart rate. However, anxiety and its numerous symptoms usually disappear once the stressful situation is resolved.

Yet, sometimes, people may suffer from anxiety that does not disappear but instead lingers and affects the person’s quality of life.

A person diagnosed with an anxiety disorder can feel sudden prolonged episodes of fear and intense anxiety that can harm their physical health. There is not only one kind of anxiety disorder. There may be general anxiety, social anxiety, separation anxiety, or even specific phobias. No matter the type of anxiety a person may have, it can still be treated with proper medication.

Treatment Options For Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders can be treated best when they are diagnosed accurately. Once you have identified that your excessive fear and worries prevent you from doing regular activities, you need to consult with a doctor specializing in mental health.

Anxiety disorders may escalate without treatment and could lead to physical afflictions or, in certain circumstances, even suicidal behaviors.

There are a few treatment options to treat anxiety disorders and their symptoms.

●      Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, also known as counseling, is one of the more common ways to treat anxiety disorders. The treatment involves talking to your assigned therapist and actively working to reduce triggers that cause anxiety. For example, talking to a professional about your fears and thoughts during an anxiety episode could help you identify any triggering behavior or actions that lead to a severe attack.

Psychotherapy also includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. CBT as therapy focuses on teaching patients how to manage their symptoms to keep them from escalating. For example, practicing CBT regularly can help those suffering from anxiety disorders slowly build up the confidence to identify triggering actions and manage them to avoid anxiety attacks.

●      Medications

Other than psychotherapy or psychological counseling, medical professionals may prescribe medications to relieve the symptoms and effects of severe anxiety. Although these medications could help with anxiety disorders, there can be some side effects.

●      Antidepressants

Although these medicines are usually prescribed to treat depression, they may also be used to treat anxiety. However, some antidepressant medicines could have severe side effects like sudden drops in blood pressure, blurry vision, or urinary infections.

●      Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

It is a non-invasive procedure to treat anxiety disorders. An electromagnetic coil is held against the forehead or scalp against a particular part of the brain, and electromagnetic pulses are transmitted to the brain through small currents.

These currents help to stimulate the nerves in the brain. The stimulated nerves could help in preventing anxiety from getting triggered. With repeated sessions, it may be possible to reduce anxiety significantly. Unlike medications, TMS has few side effects.

Anxiety disorders can be stressful and cause people undue problems. However, with proper diagnosis and effective treatment plans, people can learn to identify and reduce anxiety disorders’ symptoms and harmful effects.

Learn More About TMS Therapy

The science behind TMS treatment has shown that magnetic fields can influence the functioning of the brain and improve the symptoms of various neurological and psychiatric disorders. If you or someone you know is suffering from these conditions and looking for a non-invasive and effective treatment option, then TMS treatment might be the answer. OLYMPIA CENTER FOR TMS AND PSYCHIATRY is here to provide you with the best TMS TREATMENT SERVICES that can help you overcome your struggles and live a happier life. CONTACT US TODAY to schedule a consultation and take the first step toward a better future.
