Treating Warzone Related Major Depression with TMS

August 20, 2024 by Olympia Center for TMS & Psychiatry

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is considered experimental for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) itself, however it is FDA approved for Major Depressive Disorder which often comes with PTSD. Because Dr. Penner\’s practice is heavily focused on PTSD in veterans, as well as first responders, he is constantly updating his knowledge on recent advances in TMS use in PTSD.

What is PTSD?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop in individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. It is a complex and debilitating disorder that can have long-lasting effects on a person\’s well-being and daily functioning.

PTSD can occur as a result of various traumatic experiences, such as military combat, natural disasters, physical or sexual assault, accidents, or the sudden loss of a loved one. The symptoms of PTSD can manifest differently in each individual but generally include intrusive thoughts or memories of the traumatic event, nightmares, flashbacks, intense anxiety or fear, avoidance of triggers associated with the trauma, and changes in mood and behavior.

Without appropriate support and intervention, individuals with PTSD may struggle to cope with daily life activities and relationships. It’s important to note that anyone can develop PTSD regardless of age, gender, or background. While some individuals may recover from the initial shock and distress caused by a traumatic event over time without professional intervention, others may require treatment to manage their symptoms effectively.

PTSD in Military Personnel

PTSD is a significant mental health concern that affects many military personnel who have experienced the horrors of warzones. The psychological toll of witnessing and being involved in traumatic events can have long-lasting effects on individuals, their families, and society as a whole. Understanding and addressing PTSD in military personnel is crucial for providing appropriate support and care to those who have sacrificed so much for their countries.

The experiences of a warzone can leave a lasting impact on individuals, causing them to relive traumatic events through nightmares, flashbacks, or intrusive thoughts. These symptoms can be debilitating, affecting their ability to function in daily life and maintain healthy relationships.

In addition to the debilitating effects of PTSD, veterans may also find themselves grappling with other challenges such as addiction, feelings of shame, sleep disturbances, increased aggression, mood fluctuations, poor physical health, and difficulties in leading peaceful lives.

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA.gov) show approximately 11-20 out of 100 veterans who served in overseas operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have developed PTSD. Veterans who served during the Gulf War show similar statistics, as do those involved in the Vietnam war.

Treating Warzone Related PTSD with TMS

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a safe and efficient alternative for addressing PTSD, without the need for medication.

TMS has gained significant recognition for its effective results among patients, providing a fresh and groundbreaking approach to enhancing mental well-being. Findings from a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry show that TMS is an effective treatment option for war veterans suffering from PTSD. Remarkably, 70% of the participants experienced significant relief and no longer met the criteria for PTSD after undergoing TMS treatment sessions. This treatment alternative brings hope and the potential for healing to those who have courageously served our country.

How TMS Helps Veterans with PTSD

TMS treatment harnesses the power of electromagnetic energy to specifically target the area of the brain responsible for regulating mood, making decisions, and controlling impulses. The advanced technology used in transcranial magnetic stimulation involves delivering magnetic pulses through a coil placed on the scalp, which then penetrate into the brain and stimulate an electrical current. These pulses are comparable in strength to those used in MRI scans, ensuring precise and effective results.

By stimulating the neurotransmitters responsible for regulating mood, such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, this treatment effectively restores balance to brain chemistry that may have been impaired. As a result, individuals experience an improvement in their overall mental well-being. TMS offers a solution for veterans where previous treatments may have failed.
