Comprehensive Mental Health Support for Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the most common issues affecting daily functioning and quality of life. We all experience some worry and stress, but anxiety is a persistent, debilitating issue affecting the ability to function day to day. There are many causes and conditions for the onset of anxiety, but symptoms can often become unmanageable, necessitating support beyond traditional medical methods.
The research on TMS treating anxiety disorders is rapidly evolving. Dr Penner is constantly updating his knowledge through review of the literature and as part of your treatment plan may augment your depression treatment with the most promising advancements in TMS for anxiety specifically.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Anxiety
Likewise, research for the treatment of PTSD with TMS is rapidly evolving. Due to his work with military personale and hundreds of first responders the treatment of PTSD with TMS is a passion of Dr Penner’s. Though TMS is still only formally FDA cleared for treatment of Major Depression, the research for PTSD treatment is quite extensive and your treatment may be augmented with the latest and most promising protocols.
TMS is also beneficial for those suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) and its comorbidity with anxiety disorders, offering dual benefits for patients.
How TMS Works for Anxiety
TMS therapy involves using magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, which can improve symptoms of anxiety. This non-invasive procedure is typically conducted over several weeks, with patients receiving daily sessions. Depression and anxiety almost go hand in hand and feed into each other. Treatment of one benefits the other. It is uncommon for an individual who responds to depression to not also get the same benefits for their anxiety.
Unlike traditional pharmacological treatments, TMS does not have the unpleasant side effects often associated with medications, such as decreased libido, weight gain, and emotional blunting (inability to experience the full range of human emotions such as joy and happiness).
Scientific Evidence and Efficacy of Noninvasive Brain Stimulation for Anxiety
The current use of electromagnetic induction for transcranial stimulation dates back to 1985. Dr. Tony Barker and his colleagues invented the initial type of TMS in Sheffield, UK. Moreover, Barker scientifically proved the influence of magnetic stimulation on the motor cortex of the human brain in 1985. In 2002, the Canadian Association of Health approved the medical results and benefits of TMS.
Many devices are available for repetitive electromagnetic stimulation. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive method of stimulating neurons, showing efficacy for anxiety symptoms.
Olympia Center for TMS & Psychiatry uses the MagVita TMS Treatment System with Theta Burst which allows for very specific customization to your needs. In addition to standard intermittent theta burst, Dr Penner also provides standard high frequency repetitive TMS, continuous theta burst, and low frequency TMS. The Magvita TMS system allows for very precise treatments to be performed at other locations based on the most recent research over the “one size fits all” solution many other solutions (treatment devices) offer.
The TMS is not FDA approved for any anxiety disorder specifically, however the vast majority of our patients with anxiety experience significant improvement. Dr Penner is constantly updating his knowledge of the literature surrounding specific TMS protocols for Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Social Phobia which has been evolving for decades. Dr Penner will personally evaluate you, and customize your treatment based on your specific symptoms. He will discuss the latest literature surrounding your particular condition and whether or not modifying your treatment may be beneficial.
Treatment Process
Our treatment process is designed to be as comfortable and effective as possible. Session length varies, often as short as a little over 3 minutes. If your particular situation may benefit, you may decide with Dr Penner to augment your standard treatment which may increase treatment length up to 20 minutes. In very rare circumstances treatments may exceed this, but that is uncommon. The MagVita TMS Treatment System with Theta Burst Stimulation is used to deliver the therapy.
Patients can return to their daily activities immediately after each session. Our highly trained providers specialize in TMS treatment to affect changes in brain functioning to relieve symptoms of anxiety. We understand the sensitivity around mental health issues and getting treatment.
Customization of Treatment Plans
Our team of experts is committed to providing each client with a tailored course of treatment to support their specific needs. This includes targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in treatment plans for anxiety symptoms. TMS is FDA Approved
The Food and Drug Administration of the United States granted approval for TMS as a treatment for depression on October 8th, 2008. TMS is particularly used for treatment-resistant depression, offering hope to patients who have not responded to standard treatments for major depression.
The approval underscores the rigorous testing and scientific validation that TMS has undergone, ensuring its safety and efficacy. This milestone marked a significant advancement in the field of mental health treatment, providing a new, non-invasive option for those who have not found relief with traditional therapies.
Additional Benefits of TMS for Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Brain stimulation through TMS not only helps in reducing the symptoms of anxiety but also contributes to overall mental health by improving sleep patterns, enhancing mood, and increasing concentration and focus. Many patients report a better quality of life and greater emotional stability after completing their TMS treatment course.
