Comprehensive Mental Health Support for Depression
Depression is a common mental health disorder that can drastically impact daily life. From feelings of deep sadness to difficulty engaging in daily activities, depression can be overwhelming. Traditional treatments, such as medication, often come with unwanted side effects, and many people do not find the relief they need.
At Olympia Center for TMS and Psychiatry, we offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as a non-invasive, effective treatment for depression. TMS targets brain areas linked to mood regulation without the side effects of medication.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Depression
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) therapy works by using magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in areas of the brain responsible for mood regulation. This targeted approach offers relief without the common side effects of antidepressants, such as weight gain, fatigue, or emotional blunting.
Unlike medications, which can affect the entire body, TMS is focused on the brain’s mood centers. This makes it a great option for those who haven’t responded well to traditional treatments, providing a safe and effective way to combat depression.
How TMS Works for Depression
TMS uses electromagnetic pulses to target the prefrontal cortex, a part of the brain that plays a key role in mood regulation. This non-invasive procedure is typically conducted over several weeks,
Because of Olympia Center for TMS and Psychiatry’s extended hours scheduling at convenient times around your busy schedule is usually easy. Treatments do not have to be the same time every day. We also realize that “life happens.” While sticking with a standard treatment schedule, people get sick, or have to go out of town. Dr Penner has a philosophy of “do the best you can” and the normal minor life disruptions which may interfere with perfect scheduling usually doesn’t have a significant impact on results.
Over the course of these sessions, TMS helps normalize brain activity, leading to significant improvements in mood and mental health. Patients can return to daily activities immediately after each session, as there is no downtime or recovery needed.
Scientific Evidence and Efficacy of Noninvasive Brain Stimulation for Depression
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) was first developed in 1985 by Dr. Tony Barker and his colleagues in Sheffield, UK, who demonstrated its ability to stimulate the motor cortex. Over the years, TMS has been extensively studied, and in 2008, the FDA approved TMS for treating depression.
Research has shown that TMS can effectively modulate neural circuits involved in mood regulation, offering significant symptom relief for those with treatment-resistant depression.
Olympia Center for TMS & Psychiatry uses the MagVita TMS Treatment System with Theta Burst which allows for very specific customization to your needs. In addition to standard intermittent theta burst, Dr Penner also provides standard high frequency repetitive TMS, continuous theta burst, and low frequency TMS. The Magvita TMS system allows for very precise treatments to be performed at other locations based on the most recent research over the “one size fits all” solution many other solutions (treatment devices) offer.
While primarily approved for depression, TMS has also shown promise in addressing other mental health conditions, including anxiety. Studies demonstrate that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) provides long-term benefits, restoring balance to brain activity without the systemic side effects of medications.
Treatment Process for Depression
Our treatment process prioritizes comfort and effectiveness. TMS therapy targets key areas of the brain, such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), to improve mood and alleviate depression symptoms. Each session lasts around 30-40 minutes, with patients comfortably seated throughout. We use the advanced MagVita TMS Treatment System with Theta Burst Stimulation for precision and efficacy.
Patients can return to their daily activities immediately after each session. Our skilled providers customize each treatment plan based on the severity of the depression, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
Customization of Treatment Plans
We tailor every TMS treatment plan to meet each patient’s specific needs. By targeting the DLPFC, a key brain region involved in depression, we ensure a focused approach to relief. Whether it’s major depression or treatment-resistant depression, our plans are adjusted according to the severity and response of the patient.
Our team fosters a professional, safe, and supportive environment where clients feel comfortable and confident in their care.
Who Can Benefit from TMS for Depression?
TMS is ideal for individuals with treatment-resistant depression, particularly those who haven’t responded to antidepressants or psychotherapy. It’s a non-invasive, drug-free option for patients looking for an alternative treatment without the side effects of medication.
TMS therapy is highly effective for people suffering from major depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and other types of depression. By targeting the brain areas associated with mood regulation, TMS helps patients regain control over their lives and improve their overall quality of life.
Patient-Centered Care
We pride ourselves on offering patient-centered care, where the individual’s comfort and progress are our top priorities. From the first consultation to post-treatment follow-ups, we involve our patients in every step of their care plan.
Our team ensures that patients are well-informed about the process and what to expect. We provide a comfortable, supportive environment where patients feel safe and confident in their treatment journey.
Success Stories and Outcomes
Many of our patients have experienced life-changing improvements through TMS. Success stories range from significant symptom relief to full remission. Patients report feeling more energized, motivated, and engaged with life after completing TMS therapy.
Our clinic consistently sees positive outcomes, with many patients showing measurable improvements in their mood and overall mental health. These real-world results underscore the effectiveness of TMS as a transformative treatment for depression.
TMS is FDA Approved
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as a treatment for depression on October 8, 2008. TMS is especially beneficial for those with treatment-resistant depression, offering a non-invasive solution for patients who haven’t responded to standard treatments like medications.
This approval highlights the extensive scientific research validating TMS’s safety and effectiveness. It marked a significant advancement in depression treatment, giving patients a new option with fewer side effects than traditional therapies.
Additional Benefits of TMS for Depression
In addition to reducing depression symptoms, TMS can improve sleep quality, mood stability, and cognitive focus. Many patients report an overall enhancement in their quality of life after completing the TMS treatment course.
Frequently Asked Questions about TMS for Depression
What is TMS therapy for depression?
TMS is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, targeting areas responsible for mood regulation.
Who is TMS suitable for?
TMS is primarily used for individuals with treatment-resistant depression who haven’t found relief from traditional treatments like medication.
How long does a TMS treatment session last?
Each TMS session lasts about 30-40 minutes. Patients typically undergo sessions five times a week for about four to six weeks, depending on individual needs.
Is TMS safe?
Yes, TMS is a safe and well-tolerated treatment. It is FDA-approved and has been extensively researched, showing positive results in many clinical trials. TMS has been studied for decades.
Are there any side effects?
Most patients experience minor side effects such as mild headaches or scalp discomfort, which typically subside after a few sessions.
Will I feel any discomfort during TMS sessions?
Some individuals initially find TMS uncomfortable. Dr Penner personally sits with you during your first TMS treatment and will start your session at very low levels. Having personally performed hundreds of initial treatments he has extensive experience in easing those who have initial discomfort to their maximum target. While many individuals reach their full target by the end of the first treatment session, it is very rare that someone does not reach their full target by the end of the 2nd or 3rd treatment. After that, for those who have initial discomfort the process becomes easier and easier throughout the entire treatment. If you are one of those who has issues with comfort Dr Penner through years of experience has learned numerous techniques to address this, however the vast majority of patients have very limited problems reaching their full target. However, Dr Penner will be at your side, and purposefully will start your treatment at extremely low levels.
How soon can I expect results?
Individuals respond at different rates. Some individuals notice improvements within the first week or what Dr Penner calls "fast responders." Some indivudals experience progressive benefit throughout treatment. Some individuals respond only later into treatment, or based on your particular course after your treatment has been evaluated by Dr Penner and modified according to your experience.
Can I return to normal activities after a TMS session?
Yes, TMS is a non-invasive treatment with no downtime, allowing patients to return to daily activities immediately after each session.
Do I need a referral to start TMS treatment?
In almost all cases you may schedule a consultation with Dr Penner directly. There are extremely rare exceptions that your insurance requires a referral to see Dr Penner for a consultation. Please contact our office if you have questions. If you are a good candidate for TMS, Dr Penner's team will take care of any prior authorization requirements.
