Comprehensive Mental Health Support for PTSD
PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a debilitating condition that affects many people, often following traumatic experiences. Symptoms like flashbacks, anxiety, and nightmares make daily life difficult.
For those who haven’t found relief with traditional treatments, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) offers a non-invasive alternative that targets the brain directly, helping ease these symptoms.
TMS is particularly beneficial for individuals with treatment-resistant PTSD, allowing them to access relief without the common side effects of medications. It is an innovative solution for restoring mental health and improving quality of life.
Treatment of PTSD with TMS is rapidly evolving. Due to his work with military personale and hundreds of first responders the treatment of PTSD with TMS is a passion of Dr Penner’s. Though TMS is still only formally FDA cleared for treatment of Major Depression, the research for PTSD treatment is quite extensive and your treatment may be augmented with the latest and most promising protocols. Treatment location may differ from the “one size fits all” targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Depending on your needs you may discuss the current status of right sided treatment, either high or low frequency treatment based on the latest research. The MagVita TMS system is extremely flexible in customizing treatments over other “one size fits all” solutions.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for PTSD
PTSD and depression are fundamentally intertwined. PTSD leads to depression, the feelings of fear and despair. That depression makes it more difficult to see a way out of the fear and anxiety that PTSD causes. With the benefit of mental clarity from addressing the depression many individuals are able to initially cope, and then make therapeutic strides they had been unable to make so far with TMS. Though only FDA cleared for depression, specific treatments only for PTSD are extensively studied and a particular passion of Dr Penner’s.
How TMS Works for PTSD
TMS works by delivering magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain, specifically the prefrontal cortex. This region is responsible for regulating mood and emotions. Over time, TMS helps normalize brain activity, reducing the impact of PTSD symptoms.
Each session lasts about 30-40 minutes, with treatment typically scheduled five days a week for 4 to 6 weeks. Patients can relax during each session, knowing they can return to their normal activities immediately afterward.
Scientific Evidence and Efficacy of Noninvasive Brain Stimulation for PTSD
The current use of electromagnetic induction for transcranial stimulation dates back to 1985. Dr. Tony Barker and his colleagues invented the initial type of TMS in Sheffield, UK. Moreover, Barker scientifically proved the influence of magnetic stimulation on the motor cortex of the human brain in 1985. In 2002, the Canadian Association of Health approved the medical results and benefits of TMS.
Many devices are available for repetitive electromagnetic stimulation. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive method of stimulating neurons, showing efficacy for anxiety symptoms. Olympia Center for TMS & Psychiatry uses the MagVita TMS Treatment System with Theta Burst Stimulation.
The Food and Drug Administration of the United States granted approval for TMS as a treatment for depression on October 8th, 2008. While primarily approved for depression, TMS has shown significant promise in treating PTSD, with many patients experiencing substantial improvements. Research indicates that TMS can modulate neural circuits involved in anxiety, leading to lasting relief.
Treatment Process for PTSD
he treatment process is simple and non-invasive. During each session, patients sit comfortably while a magnetic coil delivers painless pulses to targeted areas of the brain. There’s no need for anesthesia, and there’s no downtime. Patients can go straight back to work or their normal activities after each session.
TMS therapy is typically delivered over several weeks, allowing for gradual improvement in symptoms. Each session builds on the last, promoting long-term changes in brain function that lead to relief from PTSD symptoms that many report.
Customization of Treatment Plans
No two individuals who suffer from PTSD are alike, which is why we customize each treatment plan. Our team takes the time to assess each patient’s specific symptoms and the severity of their condition. This allows us to develop a plan that is tailored to their unique needs.
We adjust the intensity and frequency of sessions based on the patient’s response to treatment. This personalized approach ensures that each individual receives the most effective care possible.
Who Can Benefit from TMS for PTSD?
Your symptoms are unique. Because TMS is non-invasive, medication free, and highly effective for depression which is fundamentally intertwined with PTSD it is often an excellent choice. TMS targeting PTSD specifically is a rapidly evolving field of research with many individuals reporting significant improvement.
For those who have endured life altering trauma, TMS can provide the relief needed to regain control over their lives. First Responders, Military personnel, and trauma survivors are among those who often benefit the most from TMS.
Patient-Centered Care
At Olympia Center for TMS and Psychiatry, we are committed to providing patient-centered care. We understand that every patient’s experience with PTSD is unique, which is why we work closely with each individual to ensure they feel supported throughout the process. From the initial consultation to the final session, we prioritize the patient’s comfort and well-being.
Our compassionate team provides guidance and support at every step, making sure that patients understand their treatment plan and feel empowered to take charge of their mental health.
Success Stories and Outcomes
Many of our patients have shared success stories about how TMS has changed their lives. From significant reductions in anxiety and flashbacks to improvements in sleep and mood, TMS offers long-term relief for PTSD sufferers. Patients who complete the course of TMS treatment often report improved relationships, greater emotional stability, and an enhanced quality of life.
The results speak for themselves, with many patients experiencing improvements within just a few weeks of starting TMS therapy.
TMS is FDA Approved
The Food and Drug Administration of the United States granted approval for TMS as a treatment for depression on October 8th, 2008. TMS is particularly used for treatment-resistant depression, offering hope to patients who have not responded to standard treatments for major depression.
The approval underscores the rigorous testing and scientific validation that TMS has undergone, ensuring its safety and efficacy. This milestone marked a significant advancement in the field of mental health treatment, providing a new, non-invasive option for those who have not found relief with traditional therapies.

How long does a TMS treatment session last?
Each TMS session lasts about 30-40 minutes. Patients typically undergo sessions five times a week for about four to six weeks, depending on individual needs.
Is TMS safe?
Yes, TMS is a safe and well-tolerated treatment. It is FDA-approved and has been extensively researched, showing positive results in many clinical trials. TMS has been studied for decades.
Will I feel any discomfort during TMS sessions?
Some individuals initially find TMS uncomfortable. Dr Penner personally sits with you during your first TMS treatment and will start your session at very low levels. Having personally performed hundreds of initial treatments he has extensive experience in easing those who have initial discomfort to their maximum target. While many individuals reach their full target by the end of the first treatment session, it is very rare that someone does not reach their full target by the end of the 2nd or 3rd treatment. After that, for those who have initial discomfort the process becomes easier and easier throughout the entire treatment. If you are one of those who has issues with comfort Dr Penner through years of experience has learned numerous techniques to address this, however the vast majority of patients have very limited problems reaching their full target. However, Dr Penner will be at your side, and purposefully will start your treatment at extremely low levels.
