How Does Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Work?

March 16, 2023 by Olympia Center for TMS & Psychiatry

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. During rTMS treatment, an electromagnetic coil is placed on the scalp near the area of the brain being targeted for stimulation. The coil generates a magnetic field that passes through the scalp and skull and stimulates the nerve cells in the targeted brain region.
rTMS treatment can help treat various neurological and psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and tinnitus. The therapy is typically administered in an outpatient setting and does not require anesthesia or sedation. A typical rTMS session lasts around 30-60 minutes, and patients typically undergo several sessions over several weeks.
While the exact mechanisms of action of rTMS are not yet fully understood, it is thought to work by increasing the activity of specific brain regions and modulating the neural circuits involved in mood regulation, pain perception, and other cognitive and emotional processes. rTMS is considered a safe and well-tolerated therapy with minimal side effects and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of depression.

Benefits of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation can offer several benefits for treating various neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Effective Treatment for Depression

rTMS is an FDA-approved treatment for depression that has been shown to be effective for individuals who do not respond to antidepressant medications. Studies have found that rTMS can significantly improve depressive symptoms, including reduced sadness, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation.

Non-Invasive and Safe

Unlike other brain stimulation techniques, such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), rTMS is a non-invasive and safe therapy that does not require anesthesia or sedation. It is generally well-tolerated, with minimal side effects, and has a very low risk of serious complications.

Targeted Treatment

This treatment can target specific brain areas involved in various mental health conditions. By targeting specific brain regions, rTMS can help to modulate the neural circuits involved in mood regulation, pain perception, and other cognitive and emotional processes.

Long-Lasting Effects

The benefits of rTMS can last for up to six months or more. This particularly benefits individuals with chronic mental health conditions who may require ongoing treatment.

Fewer Side Effects than Medication

Unlike antidepressant medications, which can have many side effects, rTMS treatment has few side effects. The most common side effects of rTMS are mild and typically include mild discomfort at the stimulation site, headache, and mild to moderate scalp discomfort.

Versatile Treatment Option

rTMS treatment is a versatile treatment that can be used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as chronic pain and tinnitus.
If you are struggling with a mental health condition and have not found relief with traditional treatments, rTMS treatment may be an option worth exploring.
